Bayern Munich 2-2 Chelsea (5-4 on pens): Lukaku miss hands Guardiola's men the spoils.

Bayern Munich 2-2 Chelsea (5-4 on pens): Lukaku miss hands Guardiola's men the spoils.
Javi Martinez struck a dramatic equaliser in the last seconds of extra time to force the game to spot kicks, with Manuel Neuer saving Romelu Lukaku's decisive penalty.

Bayern Munich clinched UEFA Super Cup victory over Chelsea on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Eden Arena in Prague on Friday.

The Premier League outfit took the lead early in the first half when Fernando Torres brilliantly finished off a flowing move, but they were pegged back shortly after the break by a long distance Franck Ribery strike.

Prior to the game going to extra time, Jose Mourinho's men lost Ramires to a second bookable offence, but they were back in front when Eden Hazard's effort deceived Manuel Neuer to restore their advantage.

However, a tap in from substitute Javi Martinez at the death sent the game to penalties, where Neuer's save from Romelu Lukaku's weak effort handed Bayern the trophy.

With doubts over the fitness of Martinez and Bastian Schweinsteiger, Bayern boss Guardiola elected to start right-back Philipp Lahm in a holding midfield position.

Mourinho, meanwhile, handed Torres a return to action after the striker had been benched for Monday's 0-0 Premier League draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

And it did not take long for the Spaniard to reward his manager's faith, as he got on the scoresheet with just eight minutes on the clock.

Hazard was the catalyst, with the Belgian taking out two opponents with a jinking run before playing out wide to Andre Schurrle, who pulled back for Torres to smash the ball home.

Ribery almost provided a reply courtesy of a brilliant exchange with Mario Mandzukic at the edge of the Chelsea box, but he could not have expected Cech to somehow keep out his low curling effort with fantastic dive down to his left.

And he fired over from a similar position 10 minutes before the half time whistle as Bayern were frustrated in their efforts to restore parity.

However, it did not take long for the newly named UEFA Best Player in Europe's quality to shine through in the second period.

The Chelsea defence appeared to have the 30 year old under control as he ambled toward the box two minutes after the restart but, from nothing, the winger produced a clever shift onto his right before thrashing past Cech at his near post to level.

The goal understandably buoyed a Bayern side reliant on possession and forced Chelsea into attempting to replicate the sort of rearguard performance familiar throughout their victorious 2011-12 Champions League campaign.

But Mourinho's men were the recipients of the best opportunities of the second half, with Branislav Ivanovic heading onto the bar and David Luiz nodding straight at Neuer after Oscar had dithered when through on goal.

Unfortunately for the Portuguese boss, his side's hopes would receive a sizeable blow with just four minutes of normal time remaining as Ramires' poor challenge on substitute Mario Gotze brought him a second yellow card and ended his participation.

But incredibly, it was Chelsea who took the lead three minutes into added time.

Hazard's well hit shot from the edge of the box looked destined for the safety of Neuer's gloves but the Germany international somehow misjudged the bounce and allowed the ball through his hands into the back of the net.

A series of fabulous saves from Cech in the second half of added time from Manduzkic, Toni Kroos, Xherdan Shaqiri and Ribery looked to have clinched the trophy for Chelsea, but there was still time for more drama.

After 15 minutes of seemingly unrelenting pressure, substitute Martinez was the recipient of a fortunate bounce in the Chelsea area with just seconds remaining and tapped the ball past Cech to send the game to penalties.

Much like they had been throughout a fabulous contest, the two teams were faultless from the spot, but with Lukaku looking set to send the shootout to sudden-death, the Belgian produced a weak effort that Neuer kept out down to his left.

Chelsea sign Eto'o from Anzhi.

Chelsea sign Eto'o from Anzhi.
The 32 year old has penned a one year deal at Stamford Bridge to become Jose Mourinho's sixth summer signing, with the club abandoning their pursuit of Wayne Rooney.

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of striker Samuel Eto'o from Anzhi Makhachkala on a one year deal.

Jose Mourinho has tracked Wayne Rooney for much of the summer, with two bids rejected, but has now moved for the 32 year old after abandoning his pursuit of the Manchester United man.

Eto'o shone under Mourinho during Inter's Champions League winning 2009-10 season, before becoming the highest paid player in the world - earning a reported €300,000 (£167,825) a week - when he moved to Anzhi  and is delighted to be reunited with the Chelsea boss.

"I am very happy to be here but also anxious because I want to get playing as soon as possible," he told the club's official website.

"It wasn't a hard decision. I saw the qualities Chelsea have, and I was very happy with Jose Mourinho before, so when the opportunity came, I was very happy to take it."

Eto'o becomes Chelsea's second summer recruit from the Russia outfit after Willian's arrival on Wednesday for £31.7m, joining Cristian Cuevas, Andre Schurrle, Mark Schwarzer and Marco van Ginkel at Stamford Bridge.

Eto'o's arrival at Chelsea is likely to herald the departure of Ba on a season long loan. The Senegal striker has attracted strong interest from West Ham and Roma.

Tottenham 3-0 Dinamo Tbilisi (agg 8-0): Defoe at the double as Georgians are swept aside.

Tottenham 3-0 Dinamo Tbilisi (agg 8-0): Defoe at the double as Georgians are swept aside.
The England international struck twice in the first half as the north Londoners strolled into the group stages of the Europa League, while Lewis Holtby netted a long range stunner.

Tottenham enjoyed total domination against Dinamo Tbilisi in the second leg of their Europa League play-off, as a 3-0 win at White Hart Lane on Thursday night added to their already healthy advantage and sealed their place in the group stage.

Two first half strikes from Jermain Defoe ended all hope of a miraculous comeback from the Georgian visitors, before Lewis Holtby wrapped things up midway through the second period with a controlled effort from distance.

And the London club will now take their place in the group stages of the Europa League for the third consecutive season, as they look to build on last year's quarter final appearance.

Andre Villas Boas handed a first start of the season to Defoe up top as Sandro made his maiden appearance in a much changed starting line up since suffering a knee injury in January.

The visitors, meanwhile, made three changes from the first leg, with Levan Khmaladze, Dorin Goga and Vouho coming in for Darko Glisic, Jaba Dvali and Xisco.

It did not take long for Defoe to make his mark on the match, with the Englishman firing narrowly wide in the 12th minute, while Sandro also reintroduced himself to the home fans with a trademark crunching tackle that brought him a yellow card soon after.

However, the hosts took some time to get going at White Hart Lane even after those flashpoints, with their comfortable first leg lead possibly the catalyst for their lacklustre showing.

Tottenham were desperately struggling for inspiration, but their quest to break the deadlock was not helped by some bizarre officiating on the half hour. Defoe darted into the box but was penalised for handball despite replays showing the ball had in fact hit the outstretched arm of an opposition defender.

But Defoe would have his moment before the half was out, as he latched onto a Holtby pass before shifting the ball away from Giorgi Gvelesiani and smashing home from the edge of the box with his left foot.

And with seconds remaining in the first period, Defoe repeated the trick to double his side's advantage, finishing from close range after Gylfi Sigurdsson had jinked into the box brilliantly.

With Sunday’s north London derby clash with Arsenal in the Premier League undoubtedly in mind, Villas Boas elected to replace Andros Townsend with young striker Harry Kane at half time.

The change had no effect on the hosts' control of the game, with Sigurdsson hitting the side netting from distance before Spurs also moved to protect Kyle Walker by replacing him with Ezekiel Fryers.

Sigurdsson came even closer to getting the goal his performance deserved with an hour on the clock, but could only strike the underside of the bar with a driven effort from 18 yards out.

However, Holtby would find more luck than his team mate soon after, as he hit the same part of the woodwork with a right footed drive only for the ball to come down inside the net to put the home side 3-0 up.

The hosts enjoyed lengthy spells of comfortable possession in the closing moments of the game, with the only blot on their copybook coming in the final minute as Defoe received a yellow card for a dive in the Tbilisi area.

Lottery Results Champions League Group Stage 2013/14: Tight Competition In Group F.
Sweepstakes Champions League group stage this time respawned group of death containing the top clubs with equal force.

Once again, the Champions League group draw conducted at the Grimaldi Forum, Monaco, on Thursday (29/8) local time the group was re-spawn of hell. Hot group that was apparently not simply amount to one group.

Call it group B in which the champions of Serie A, Juventus, shelter. Juventus must compete with La Liga runnersup Real Madrid, Galatasaray Turkish league champions, and Danish champions FC Copenhagen. Inhabitants of this group would not want to compete horns and fight two tickets to get through to the next round.

Group F was no less hot than group B. Champions League runnersup last season, Borussia Dortmund had to scramble seats with Napoli are starting to find their performance under the tutelage of Rafael Benitez. Not to mention Arsenal and Marseille is certainly not going to let the two clubs get what they want with ease.

Spanish champions Barcelona are also facing a tough opponent. In addition to AC Milan that they had trouble last season, the Blaugrana will also compete with the dark horses Ajax Amsterdam and Glasgow Celtic in Group H.

Meanwhile, the European champions Bayern Munich who were adapting to coach Pep Guardiola will compete with Manchester City in Group D along with CSKA Moscow and Viktoria Plzen. Following the draw for the group stages of the Champions League more:

Celtic 3-0 Shakhter Karagandy (Agg 3-2): Forrest leaves it late to secure Champions League progress.

Celtic 3-0 Shakhter Karagandy (Agg 3-2): Forrest leaves it late to secure Champions League progress.
A stoppage time goal from the 22-year-old completed a stunning turnaround as the SPL outfit booked their place in the group stages of Europe's premier cup competition.

Celtic overturned a two goal first leg deficit in dramatic fashion to beat Shakhter Karagandy 3-0 at Celtic Park on Wednesday night to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League.

Neil Lennon's side dominated proceedings and, with the match appearing to be heading for extra-time, finally secured their passage in the 92nd minute as James Forrest netted the decisive third goal.

After being frustrated for the majority of the first half by goalkeeper Aleksandr Mokin, Celtic finally found a way through with an outstanding 25 yard effort from Kris Commons.

The Bhoys were level on aggregate just three minutes after the restart when Georgios Samaras coolly finished from 10 yards, before Forrest then delighted the home fans in added time.

Lennon made three changes to the side that lost the first leg, with Emilio Izaguirre, Virgil van Dijk and Steven Mouyokolo coming out, and Adam Matthews, Efe Ambrose and Stokes taking their place. Viktor Kumyov, meanwhile, kept faith in the same side that started in Kazakhstan.

Celtic began the game with plenty of intent, but Mokin in the Shakhter goal produced a string of fine saves.

The first was a stunning point blank stop from Mikael Lustig's header in the sixth minute, and the keeper followed that up by palming away Forrest's fierce strike from the edge of the box.

Still Celtic came forward and twice Anthony Stokes had the chance to open the scoring.

First he saw he a drilled close-range effort stopped by Mokin, before the former Sunderland striker saw a header from Commons' cross come off his shoulder, aiding the Shakhter goalkeeper's save to his left.

The home side were further frustrated in the 15th minute when Commons struck a free kick from the left channel that looked destined for the back of the net before Mokin parried it away.

Lennon's team maintained their dominance in possession, but the clear cut chances began to dry up as the away side defended resolutely.

But the breakthrough finally came in first-half stoppage time when Commons took ownership of the ball 25 yards out from goal and unleashed a fierce left-footed shot that swerved away from Mokin and into the far corner.

Celtic levelled the tie just three minutes after the break as a Celtic corner was only half cleared and Lustig's effort was controlled by Samaras, with the Greece international lifting his strike high into the net to send Celtic Park into raptures.

It should have been three 11 minutes later when a surging run by Forrest led to him crossing to Stokes who somehow managed to volley against the crossbar from six yards.

They were almost made to pay for their profligacy as twice Shakhter came close.

First Fraser Forster flapped at a corner and Mathews cleared an Andrei Finonchenko header off the line, before a scramble in the box after a long throw led to the ball cannoning back off the bar.

Celtic kept probing for the goal that would send them through and Stokes came close in the 88th minute but shot wide from outside the area.

But they would not be denied as the 25 year old skipped past two challenges before laying the ball into Forrest's path who blasted home the winner and sent Celtic into the group stages of the Champions League.

Real Sociedad 2-0 Olympique Lyonnais (4-0 on aggregate): Vela double seals progression.

Real Sociedad 2-0 Olympique Lyonnais (4-0 on aggregate): Vela double seals progression.
The Mexican striker netted two second-half goals to see his side into the group stages of the competition following their 2-0 win in France last week.

Real Sociedad confirmed their place in the Champions League group stages with a 2-0 victory at home to Olympique Lyonnais.

The Basque outfit had claimed a 2-0 win in the first leg of the tie and two second-half goals from Carlos Vela dumped the French giants into the Europa League.

Lyon began the game brightly and dominated possession in search of an early goal to get themselves back in the tie.

However, they failed to test Claudio Bravo in the Sociedad goal and it was the home side who carved out the first clear-cut chance of the game.

Antoine Griezmann, who lit up the first leg with a sublime scissor kick, raced through in the eighth minute, but fluffed his lines as his weak attempted chip was easily gathered by Anthony Lopes.

That opening gave Arrasate’s men some impetus though and Griezmann began pulling the strings.

Vela could only fire wide after the Frenchman cut a corner back to him just before the half hour mark, before Griezmann himself had another effort saved by Lopes.

The former Arsenal man was then involved in the major talking point of the first half as he went down in the area under a challenge from Kone, only for referee Damir Skomina to book him for simulation.

And the 24 year old could have made amends by opening the scoring a minute later but Lopes palmed his lofted shot wide.

Sociedad picked up where they left off after the break and Haris Seferovic almost grabbed his second goal of the tie on 49 minutes when he collected Vela’s pass, cut inside from the right and rifled a left footed effort off the inside of the near post with Lopes beaten.

And Seferovic missed a gilt edged opportunity to wrap up the home side’s victory shortly after as a swift counter attack ended with Griezmann laying the ball across to him, but the Switzerland international could only side foot wide.

However, Sociedad did not have to wait long for the breathing space they were after as Vela put them three goals to the good on aggregate after 66 minutes.

Griezmann was again the creator as the former Arsenal forward met his inswinging corner with an unmarked header from inside the six yard box.

And Vela saved his best for last, as he grabbed his second of the night with a brilliant solo effort in injury time that involved him beating two defenders before coolly lifting the ball over Lopes.

AC Milan 3-0 PSV (4-1 on aggregate): Boateng & Balotelli ensure group stage place.

AC Milan 3-0 PSV (4-1 on aggregate): Boateng & Balotelli ensure group stage place.
The Rossoneri brushed aside the Dutch giants with a confident performance at San Siro to seal qualification for the fifth consecutive year.

AC Milan are through to the group stages of the Champions League following a 3-0 victory over PSV at San Siro on Wednesday.

The two sides had approached the clash with the tie finely poised at 1-1 after a tight encounter in Netherlands a week ago.

However, two Kevin Prince Boateng strikes either side of a Mario Balotelli effort ensured that the Rossoneri reached the competition once more.

The result also eased the pressure on Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri, whose job was reportedly under threat should the Italians have failed to ensure they would make the lucrative step beyond the play offs.

The start of the game provided plenty of evidence that fans would be treated to an attacking encounter in Italy. Tim Matavz was the recipient of the first clear chance, with his header being brilliantly kept out by Christian Abbiati, but it would be Milan who took an all important lead in the tie moments later.

The goal was all Boateng's work, with the midfielder picking the ball up 25 yards from goal before shifting onto his right and firing beyond the despairing dive of Jeroen Zoet to put his side ahead.

Clearly buoyed by the goal, the hosts began to dominate the match. A short backpass from Joshua Brenet almost allowed Stephan El Shaarawy to make the most of his side's ascendency soon after, before the 19 year old full back also presented Balotelli with an opportunity after dithering on the ball.

El Shaarawy then came mightily close to scoring as his volley smashed off the bar before hitting the line, with replays proving inconclusive as to whether the ball went in.

However, that near miss appeared to spark the visitors into life, and they came within inches of equalising in the dying moments of the first half when Jetro Willens' cross cum shot struck the crossbar with Abbiati stranded.

The Italian goalkeeper might have been lucky not to concede just before the break but there was no doubting the part he played in preventing a PSV equaliser in the very first minute of the second half. A cross from the left evaded a mass of bodies in the Milan box before landing at the feet of the unmarked Georginio Wijnaldum but, with the Dutchman looking certain to score, Abbiati somehow produced a stunning close range block of a vicious half volley.

And the merits of that stop were clear in the 54th minute, as Balotelli put the tie beyond all doubt by showing quick reflexes to volley home left footed after Philippe Mexes flicked on a dangerous El Shaarawy free kick.

The hosts enjoyed control of the match from that moment on, even with the possibility of a momentum-shifting PSV goal looming. But the necessary gloss was added to the scoreline with just 13 minutes of normal time remaining as Boateng managed to squeeze a left footed shot under Zoet's hand from a tight angle to finally kill the visitors' hopes of progression.

Meanwhile, Zenit St Petersburg enjoyed an even more comfortable passage into the next round as a two goals from Danny allied to goals from Aleksandr Bukharov and Andrey Arshavin completed a 4-2 win and an 8-3 overall victory against Pacos de Ferreira.

And in Slovenia, a third-minute goal from Stanislav Tecl helped Viktoria Plzen beat Maribor 1-0 and 4-1 on aggregate.

Barcelona 0-0 Atletico Madrid (Agg 1-1, Barcelona win on away goals): Messi misses penalty as Simeone's men see red in Supercopa defeat.

Barcelona 0-0 Atletico Madrid (Agg 1-1, Barcelona win on away goals): Messi misses penalty as Simeone's men see red in Supercopa defeat
The Blaugrana struggled to break down the capital club's defence at Camp Nou but come away with the first silverware of the Spanish season.

Barcelona have claimed the Supercopa de Espana with thanks to an away goals victory over Atletico Madrid following a 0-0 draw at Camp Nou.

The Blaugrana enjoyed the lion's share of possession at Camp Nou and Lionel Messi missed a penalty late on, but in the end Neymar's draw rescuing away goal a week ago proved to be the difference.

Freiburg 1-1 Bayern Munich: Hofler ends Guardiola's 100% record.

Freiburg 1-1 Bayern Munich: Hofler ends Guardiola's 100% record.
Xherdan Shaqiri looked to have given the treble-winners a narrow victory but a late strike from Nicolas Hofler meant the Bavarians had to settle for a point.

An under strength Bayern Munich drew 1-1 with Freiburg on Tuesday night as Pep Guardiola's 100% start to the Bundesliga season came to an end.

Xherdan Shaqiri put the visitors ahead after 32 minutes when he fired past Oliver Baumann in the Freiburg goal.

But Bayern were pegged back five minutes from time when they conceded only their second goal of the season, as substitute Nicolas Hofler volleyed home from close range.

Guardiola made six changes to his side from the 2-0 win over Nurnberg ahead of Friday's Uefa Super Cup clash with Chelsea on Friday, with the likes of Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben and Mario Mandzukic all dropping to the bench.

The hosts were without the suspended Francis Coquelin, while Christian Gunter replaced Mensur Mudzja.

It was Freiburg who had the first goalscoring chance of the match when Julian Schuster's powerful strike forced a good save from Manuel Neuer after 11 minutes.

Soon after, Bayern’s Toni Kroos and Xherdan Shaqiri both stung the palms of Baumann during what was an entertaining opening period.

Guardiola’s much changed side then began to control proceedings and were rewarded just after the half-hour mark when Shaqiri gave them the lead.

The Switzerland international controlled a Thomas Muller cross from the right, which evaded Oliver Sorg, and drove home past Baumann.

Despite dominating possession for the remainder of the half, the champions could not add to their slender lead before the break.

Shaqiri then almost doubled his tally for the game 10 minutes into the second period, forcing Baumann into a save with his feet, before Charles Laprevotte cut in from the left and hit the post with a curling effort for the home side.

With the game finely poised, Bayern should have doubled their lead when Kroos found himself clean through. However, the Germany international was thwarted one on one before the goalkeeper reacted well to deny Muller's follow up.

But, with just five minutes to go, the home side drew level, with substitute Hofler firing a left foot volley past Neuer from close range.

Dante almost restored Bayern's lead three minutes later when he poked over from inside the six-yard box, but Guardiola was forced to settle for a share of the spoils for the first time this season.

Arsenal 2-0 Fenerbahce (agg 5-0): Ramsey double confirms qualification for Gunners.

Arsenal 2-0 Fenerbahce (agg 5-0): Ramsey double confirms qualification for Gunners
The Turkish side improved on their feeble home performance but the tie was already beyond them and the Welsh midfielder's headline stealing goals saw the Londoners through.
Arsenal qualified for the Champions League group stages for the 16th straight year with a 2-0 win over Fenerbahce on Tuesday.

Aaron Ramsey stole the show at the Emirates Stadium by grabbing both goals, wrapping up a comfortable 5-0 aggregate triumph.

Arsenal dominated possession in the first half and Ramsey was on hand to tap home from six yards in the 25th minute. Theo Walcott then hit the crossbar from a free kick before the Welshman's volley made it 2-0.

Boss Arsene Wenger made two changes to the side who beat Fulham 3-1 on Saturday, with Jack Wilshere and Nacho Monreal replacing Tomas Rosicky and Kieran Gibbs. Fenerbahce, meanwhile, included former Liverpool players Raul Meireles and Dirk Kuyt.

Arsenal dominated the early possession but they almost conceded a goal in unusual circumstances. A scramble in the box led to Bacary Sagna clearing his effort straight against Meireles, with the ricochet drawing a smart save from Wojciech Szczesny.

The home side then fashioned their first chance with a swift counterattack. Santi Cazorla burst through two challenges and laid the ball to Wilshere, whose pass found Olivier Giroud, but the Frenchman curled his effort wide from 20 yards.

The Gunners continued to probe and their pressure finally yielded a breakthrough in the 25th minute. Gokhan Gonul tried to prevent Lukas Podolski's through ball from finding Walcott but his sliding challenge went straight to Ramsey, who swept the ball home.

Giroud then came close to doubling the advantage seven minutes later when his shot from a narrow angle forced Volkan Demirel into a smart save with his legs.

Fenerbahce almost caught Arsenal out when Emmanuel Emenike broke free on the left and unleashed a fierce drive that Szczesny pushed against the post before Giroud found himself in space, only to fire over from six yards after an excellent low cross from Cazorla.

Podolski was withdrawn from the action a minute into the second half when he pulled up with what looked like a hamstring injury. His removal temporarily stunted Arsenal's momentum and Egemen Korkmaz linked well with Emenike for the visitors before crashing an effort off the crossbar, although he would have been denied by the offside flag.

Cazorla almost grabbed the second for Arsenal in the 63rd minute before Walcott dipped a free kick against the crossbar.

But, with 18 minutes left, they wrapped up the win when Gibbs broke free before crossing for Ramsey to volley into the corner.

Arsenal were given a late scare when Wilshere went down holding his ankle after a robust challenge from Meireles but he recovered to finish the game.

Manchester United 0-0 Chelsea: Bore draw as Moyes makes Old Trafford bow.

Manchester United 0-0 Chelsea: Bore draw as Moyes makes Old Trafford bow.
Wayne Rooney featured despite the Blues' public interest in his services yet neither team could make a decisive breakthrough in a match of few chances on Monday night.

Manchester United and Chelsea played out a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford on Monday in a game that failed to live up to its pre-match billing.

The fixture marked the first time that David Moyes locked horns with Jose Mourinho as United manager but neither manager could gain the psychological upper hand, although the point puts the Blues clear at the top of the Premier League.

Oscar tried to prise open a tight United defence in a lacklustre first half but twice wasted good opportunities with weak efforts straight at David de Gea. Robin van Persie had United's best effort when he hit the side netting from inside the area.

The second half followed a similar pattern and England international Danny Welbeck will rue his wastefulness after digging an effort wide after good work from Wayne Rooney. United also had claims for a penalty when a Tom Cleverley shot struck Frank Lampard's hand in the box.

Moyes named Rooney in his starting XI for the first time, with the striker the subject of two rejected bids during the close-season from Monday night's opposition. Ryan Giggs dropped to the bench to allow for his inclusion.

Chelsea started the game with a surprise as Andre Schurrle led the line. Kevin De Bruyne was also given the nod as Juan Mata and Demba Ba were omitted from the side that started against Aston Villa on Wednesday.

Both sides struggled to create openings in a tepid opening 45 minutes. It was the away side who had the first chance in the 10th minute when a low De Bruyne cross rebounded to Oscar who hit a tame effort straight at De Gea.

Chelsea had managed to quash the threat Van Persie for the opening 20 minutes but the Dutchman had United's first meaningful effort. Michael Carrick dispossessed Ramires in midfield and the former Arsenal man picked up the loose ball on the edge of the box but he went too wide before firing his effort against the side netting.

Rooney then had his first effort on goal. He showed a neat piece of skill to feint inside Gary Cahill but his shot from 20 yards was weak and rolled harmlessly to Petr Cech.

United were beginning to enjoy more of the ball and, in the 38th minute, Phil Jones's low cross was only half-cleared by John Terry and Cleverley hit a first-time shot from 20 yards that cleared the crossbar.

The half ended with a weak shot from Oscar after a series of neat passes in the Chelsea midfield the Brazilian will feel that he could have done more to trouble De Gea.

After a slow start to the second half, United should have taken the lead after 56 minutes. Rooney showed good control just outside the area before slipping a neat through ball to Welbeck but the striker fluffed his lines as he chipped his effort over from 10 yards.

Cahill was unlucky with a 30 yard drive that De Gea got down well to save, before United had claims for a penalty.

Cleverley's half volley hit Lampard's hand in the area but referee Martin Atkinson deemed that the midfielder had not deliberately made contact with the shot.

Rooney almost had the last say late on when he tested Cech with a strong 25 yard effort. The shot may have been going wide but the Chelsea man took no chances.

With two minutes remaining, United had another penalty shout when John Obi Mikel turned into Van Persie's volley but the decision would have been harsh on the Nigerian who knew had no time to dodge the shot.

Sampdoria 0-1 Juventus: Tevez fires Bianconeri to opening day win.

Sampdoria 0-1 Juventus: Tevez fires Bianconeri to opening day win
The Argentine scored on his Serie A debut to give the defending Serie A champions all three points.

Carlos Tevez scored his first league goal for Juventus as the Bianconeri opened their Serie A campaign with a 1-0 win over Sampdoria.

The striker who joined from Manchester City earlier this summer found the net just before the hour mark to give Juve all three points at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Antonio Conte handed a league debut to Tevez, with the Argentinian partnering Mirko Vucinic in attack, while Paul Pogba started in midfield in the absence of Claudio Marchisio.

Juventus came close to taking the lead after just two minutes, when Andrea Pirlo's superb long-range strike was tipped over the bar by Brazilian goalkeeper Angelo Da Costa.

Sampdoria responded well, pressing Conte's men back into their own half, but they could not take advantage of that period of supremacy and almost fell behind when Da Costa produced another fine save as Kwadwo Asamoah met a Pirlo corner with a powerful diving header.

The visitors attacking quality was evident, and Sampdoria were again grateful for the reflexes of Da Costa as he denied Tevez his first goal in Italian football with a great stop at the near post.

Asamoah fired a swerving effort over the bar from the edge of the area seven minutes before the interval, but despite an array of chances the Bianconeri were left frustrated as they failed to find a breakthrough before half-time.

But on 57 minutes the visitors sprung back into life in spectacular fashion. Vucinic, Arturo Vidal and Pogba combined excellently in a wonderful team move, with the latter pulling back for Tevez to tap into an empty net with Da Costa stranded.

However, the hosts nearly crafted an instant response, as defender Andrea Costa converted from an inswinging freekick only for the assistant referee to disallow the goal for offside.

Pogba, afforded too much time and space by Sampdoria, continued to exert his influence on the game, and he was heavily involved again as Juventus looked to close the game out, crossing for Stephan Lichtsteiner, only to see the Swiss head wide.

Juve took their foot off the gas in the dying embers of the game, with Sampdoria lacking the ability to turn the deficit around.

And the game ended on a sour note for the hosts, with substitute Paolo Castellini sent-off for a lunging tackle on Lichtsteiner to extinguish any hope of a late comeback.

Granada 0-1 Real Madrid: Early Benzema strike proves decisive.

Granada 0-1 Real Madrid: Early Benzema strike proves decisive.
A solitary strike from the France striker was the difference between the two sides at Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes.

A 10th minute strike from Karim Benzema gave Real Madrid a narrow 1-0 away victory over Granada on Monday night.

The striker's second goal of the season was enough for Carlo Ancelotti's men to take all three points from their trip to the Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes.

While Madrid exerted plenty of pressure on Lucas Alcaraz's side, they were made to work hard for their opportunities and could not add to their lead.

Ancelotti started Alvaro Arbeloa at right back in place of Daniel Carvajal, while Angel Di Maria came in for the injured Sami Khedira.

For the hosts, Diego Mainz replaced Jeison Murillo in the heart of their defence.

The visitors had won their last five games in all competitions and began positively, with Benzema dinking over Roberto but off target five minutes in.

However, four minutes later, the France international found the net to give the visitors the advantage.

Di Maria's deep cross found Cristiano Ronaldo in the six yard box, but while the Portuguese struggled to control the delivery, Benzema was on hand to divert the ball home.

Youssef El Arabi should have equalised 10 minutes later, but his tame effort was hit straight at Diego Lopez.

While Madrid were content to keep the ball and probe, neither they nor their opposition were able to create further goalscoring opportunities as Ancelotti's men took a slender one goal lead in at the break.

Granada saw a claim for a penalty turned down 12 minutes after the interval after an Allan Nyom effort appeared to deflect off Arbeloa's arm.

That sparked the half into life, with Isco beating Manuel Iturra on the left, four minutes later, before striking the outside of Roberto's post.

Ancelotti's side continued to threaten, with Ronaldo forcing two saves from the home goalkeeper, but the Italian had to settle for a slender win.

Mourinho confirms Willian has chosen Chelsea over Tottenham & rules out Mata exit.

The Blues boss believes his side have won the race for the 25 year old midfielder and trumped their London rivals to the deal, but has dismissed talk linking Mata with a move away.

Jose Mourinho claims Anzhi Makhachkala midfielder Willian has chosen to join Chelsea over Tottenham and insists Juan Mata will not be leaving Stamford Bridge this summer.

Spurs looked set to capture the signature of the Brazil international in a move that would see him become their third club record deal of the summer, following deals for Roberto Soldado and Corinthians midfielder Paulinho.

However, a late €37 million bid (£31.6m) lodged by rivals Chelsea on Thursday added competition for his signature and Mourinho now believes the player has chosen a move to Stamford Bridge instead.

"He’s an extra target to Rooney. We have to do a medical," Mourinho told reporters when asked if the move for the Brazilian is complete.

"I am happy with my squad but every one of us says we are happy. We always want something more and never close the door."

The 25 year old travelled to Tottenham’s Enfield Training Centre to complete a medical on Wednesday, despite not having signed a contract with the north London club.

Mourinho believes Spurs acted with "danger" by performing a medical before the deal was complete, but denied speculation that any move for the midfielder would force Spain international Mata to leave the club.

"That's the danger of medicals before contracts," he continued, when asked about Willian’s potential move to White Hart Lane.

"I want a 22 player squad. If somebody comes, somebody leaves. We don't need to sell. Loan probably yes.

"He Mata is a player we all like, a player we all want to keep. We want more quality, not less quality."

Demichelis close to Manchester City move.

The Argentina defender is set to move to England despite only joining his current employers in July.
Manchester City have edged closer to the signing of Atletico Madrid defender Martin Demichelis, Goal can reveal.

The Argentine, who only joined Atleti from Malaga back in July, is keen to link with his former boss at the Etihad Stadium, with City in discussions with the Liga club over a settlement fee that could rise to €4.1 million based on success.

Manuel Pellegrini is faced with something of a defensive crisis following that news that skipper Vincent Kompany is set to be unavailable for at least four weeks.

The Belgium international centre-back picked up a groin injury during Monday's Premier League clash with Newcastle, with Pellegrini confirming on Friday that the 27 year old is set to be sidelined for at least a month.

He told the club's official website: "I prefer the doctor has the final word on this but I think he will be out for at least one month.

"If we do strengthen at centre back it will not just be because of Vincent Kompany’s injury. We have a very good squad and we see what happens.

"Today or tomorrow we will know exactly how long Vincent will be out for."

With Matija Nastasic only recently returning to training following an ankle injury and Micah Richards sidelined with a hamstring problem, Joleon Lescott is City's only fully fit centre back going into Sunday's meeting with Cardiff City.

Goal reported earlier in August that Pellegrini had given the green light over a move for Real Madrid defender Pepe, although Demichelis represents a more cost-effective option with Carlo Ancelotti's side initially demanding €35m for the Portuguese.

Arsenal reject Schalke's Podolski Uchida part exchange offer.

The Gunners have had a €7 million bid turned for the Japanese international but are unwilling to swap their German forward in exchange for the 25 year old right back.
Arsenal have told Schalke that Lukas Podolski is not for sale after he was suggested by the German club as part of an ambitious swap deal for defender Atsuto Uchida.

Talks have been held between the two clubs after the Gunners made a €7 million bid for Japanese right back Uchida earlier this week, with Arsene Wenger sanctioning a flurry of moves for new signings.

But the straight cash offer was rejected by Schalke and a possible part exchange deal involving Podolski has failed to get off the ground due to Wenger's reluctance to lose the Germany international.

The French boss is unwilling to sell the 28 year old forward even though he has had a frustrating time at the Emirates Stadium since joining from Koln last year.

Podolski was omitted from the starting line up for the Gunners’ 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa last weekend in favour of Alex Oxlade Chamberlain but returned to the team for the 3-0 midweek win against Fenerbahce.

Goal revealed last week that Arsenal had targeted Uchida to provide defensive cover this season and be groomed as a long term replacement for Bacary Sagna.

Wenger wants a right back who can fit in with the Gunners’ playing style and challenge Carl Jenkinson for the first team slot if Sagna leaves when his current agreement expires next summer.
The Frenchman re opened contract talks with Arsenal earlier this month but there was no breakthrough and he is still expected to leave the north London club.

Valencia 'would listen to offers for Guaita'

Valencia 'would listen to offers for Guaita'.
The goalkeeper looks set to leave los Che after the Liga side revealed they will consider bids for his services.

Valencia have admitted they will listen to offers for goalkeeper Guaita after Arsenal pulled out of a move for the player.

The Gunners have been linked with a move for the 26 year old keeper, but their initial interest was apparently rejected by the Liga side and Arsene Wenger was believed to have been put off by his €20 million price tag.

Guaita made 25 appearances in all competitions last season two less than rival stopper Diego Alves but was not selected for Valencia's opening day win against Malaga last Sunday.

Club president Amadeo Salva admitted the player was unhappy at being second choice at Mestalla, but insisted he would only consider a bid that met their valuation.

"Guaita is a world class keeper and we have no need to sell, but we would study the price of any offers," Salva told Las Provincas.

"He is not happy with being a substitute sometimes, and his agents have reported that he could find a way out.

"This does not sit well with the board if you do not play every week, you have to make sure you keep respecting Valencia."

Guaita is reported to have a €25 million release clause in his contract at Valencia, which expires in 2015.

Mourinho puts Rooney bid on hold until after Old Trafford clash.

Mourinho puts Rooney bid on hold until after Old Trafford clash.
The Chelsea manager has reiterated his intention to lodge a fresh offer for the unsettled striker, but is keen for further talks to wait until next week due to "ethical" reasons.

Jose Mourinho has revealed Chelsea will temporarily halt their pursuit of Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney until after the two clubs meet at Old Trafford on Monday.

The Blues have seen two bids for the unsettled forward rejected by the Premier League champions, with manager David Moyes insisting the England international is not for sale.

Goal exclusively revealed on Wednesday that United are planning on re opening discussions with Chelsea as they look to include Juan Mata as part of any deal but Mourinho insists no talks will take place ahead of Monday.

"We did bid for Rooney before and we will do [again] later," the Portuguese told reporters after Chelsea's 2-1 win over Aston Villa.

"[But] I don't want Chelsea to do it before we go there ... from the ethical point of view."

On the night, Chelsea were pushed all the way by a revitalised Villans, with Antonio Luna's own goal and a late Branislav Ivanovic header maintaining their 100 per cent start to the Premier League season.

There were question marks over whether Ivanovic should have been given his marching order minutes before netting the winner after appearing to elbow Christian Benteke, but Mourinho deemed the incident as "50/50".

"That was very hard. I missed that about the Premier League! Normally matches in the Bernabeu we win every match very comfortable, this was very hard, it's what I like. I told Paul Lambert that they deserve a point, it wouldn't be unfair.

"Benteke makes a lot of fouls and the opponent who plays against him has to make a lot of fouls.

"Paul Lambert reminds me of me at his age. Now I complain with some decisions, at his age I complained at every decision. Paul complains at every decision, I was the same. Benteke and Ivanovic, they are two giants, it was 50/50."

Barcelona suffer Messi injury scare

Barcelona suffer Messi injury scare
The Blaugrana's talisman could miss his side's upcoming games after being replaced at half time on Wednesday night.

Barcelona face an anxious wait to determine the severity of Lionel Messi's hamstring injury after he was forced to come off at the end of the first half in the 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid.

A first Blaugrana goal for Neymar cancelled out David Villa's opener for Atleti in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup on Wednesday, but Messi's withdrawal at the break marred the visitors' spirited fightback.

"Messi has been replaced as a precaution following some discomfort in the back of the left thigh," read a Tweet on the club's official Twitter stream during the game.

The Argentina international will now undergo further tests on Thursday which will reveal the full extent of his problem, with supporters no doubt hoping he hasn't suffered the same problem that kept him out of the end of last season.

Messi sustained a hamstring injury in the first leg of Barcelona's Champions League quarter-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

He then appeared as a substitute in the second leg to inspire Barca to victory, but the 26-year-old only aggravated the injury further and sat out the final three games of the campaign with the Liga title already secured.

Lyon 0-2 Real Sociedad: Sublime Griezmann goal puts Spaniards in control of the tie.

Lyon 0-2 Real Sociedad: Sublime Griezmann goal puts Spaniards in control of the tie.
A stunning scissor kick from the boyhood les Gones fan gave the visitors the lead before Haris Seferovic smashed home a second after the break.

Real Sociedad put one foot in the Champions League group stages with a superb 2-0 victory away to 10 man Olympique Lyonnais on Tuesday.

The Spanish outfit put on a classy display of fluent attacking football at Stade Gerland, leaving their Ligue 1 hosts an uphill task to turn the tie around in the return leg of their play off at the Estadio Municipal de Anoeta on August 28.

Sociedad took the lead when Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring with a sensational scissor kick in the first half. The strike was extra special for the Frenchman who grew up as a boyhood Lyon fan.

And his effort was almost outdone by Haris Seferovic after the break, as his 25 yard half volley thundered into the top corner.

Lyon’s task became even more difficult when centre back Milan Bisevac was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 75th minute, with the French side now having it all to do in the return.

Lyon coach Remi Garde kept faith with the same starting XI that defeated Sochaux 3-1 on Friday, while Sociedad made four changes from their 2-0 victory over Getafe at the weekend, including Griezmann starting in place of Ruben Pardo.

The visitors started the brighter of the two sides, looking the more likely to create openings.

And they were unlucky not to take the lead in the 12th minute when Carlos Vela engineered an opportunity on the edge of the area, only to see his left footed shot cannon back off the post.

However, they did not have to wait long to get the breakthrough their play deserved as just five minutes later the travelling support were celebrating an early goal of the season contender.

Vela played a teasing outswinging cross from the left that went behind Griezmann, but the 22 year old showed superb athleticism to meet the ball and fire a left footed scissor kick into the bottom corner.

That setback seemed to spark Lyon into action and Yoann Gourcuff produced their best moment of the half when he played a neat one two with Alexandre Lacazette before striking first time. Only a smart save from Claudio Bravo at his near post denied Lyon an equaliser.

Lacazette then had a penalty claim turned down when he went to ground after going shoulder to shoulder in the area with Inigo Martinez, but his appeals were waved away by referee Milorad Mazic.

Lyon needed a quick start to the second half and Maxime Gonalons should have done better when he headed wide from Gourcuff's corner despite being unmarked in the area.

They were duly punished after 50 minutes by another piece of brilliance.

Some exquisite one touch football led to Griezmann laying the ball into the path of Seferovic on the left hand side, before the Swiss struck an unstoppable half volley from 25 yards that flew beyond Anthony Lopes into the top corner.

With the match slipping away, Lyon needed a goal to change the complexion of the tie, and they came desperately close in the 68th minute when Gonalons’ header from Gourcuff's corner thundered off the underside of the crossbar.

The situation worsened for the home side, however, when Bisevac was shown a second yellow card for a trip on Vela on the edge of the box with quarter of an hour remaining.

Vela could have made it three with two minutes remaining when he cut inside Lopes, but his effort was blocked on the line by Gueida Fofana, leaving la Real in firm control of the playoff ahead of next week's return leg.

PSV 1-1 AC Milan: Abbiati howler hands Dutch a lifeline.

PSV 1-1 AC Milan: Abbiati howler hands Dutch a lifeline.
The Italian fumbled a long range effort to gift Tim Matavz an equaliser after Stephan El Shaarawy had put the visitors in front in Eindhoven.

Tim Matavz's second half strike secured a 1-1 draw for PSV as their Champions League play off with AC Milan hangs in the balance.

Stephan El Shaarawy opened the scoring for the visitors after 15 minutes with a close range header at the end of a flowing move.

Kevin Prince Boateng released Ignazio Abate down the right hand side and his pin point cross was met by the striker, who headed powerfully past Jeroen Zoet.

PSV got themselves level on the hour as Matavz reacted quickest to head past Christian Abbiati after the goalkeeper had failed to hold a Jeffrey Bruma strike.

And despite late pressure, neither side could find a winner to give them the advantage heading into the second leg.

After being cup-tied for last season’s European campaign, Mario Balotelli was given his first start for Milan in the Champions League, joining El Shaarawy and Boateng in attack.

PSV coach Philip Cocu was dealt a blow in the lead up to the game with the news that in form striking starlet Zakaria Bakkali had been ruled out with a groin injury.

The 17 year old who has scored four goals in four games in all competitions this season was replaced in the starting line up by Matavz.

PSV started well, but having survived an early period of pressure Milan sprang into life in the 15th minute as El Shaarawy broke the deadlock.

The 20 year old rose unmarked to head home Abate’s right wing cross after some lax PSV defending.

The Dutch side sought a response, and with eight minutes of the half to play Adam Maher came close to levelling, only to see his shot rattle the crossbar.

The 20 year old midfielder broke at pace towards the Milan defence before holding off the challenge from Cristian Zapata and firing in his shot, only for the woodwork to come to Abbiati's rescue.

Milan should have doubled their lead early in the second half but El Shaarawy missed two clear cut chances after excellent work from Balotelli.

The striker saw his first chance bounce wide of Zoet after a delicate chip, and his second opportunity was denied by a perfectly timed tackle from Jetro Willems.

Those misses proved to be costly as PSV equalised on the hour mark.

Bruma sent a speculative long range effort towards goal and the ball bounced in front of Abbiati, causing it to strike him on the chest and loop into the air.

And before the goalkeeper could react, Matavz pounced to head the ball into the back of the net to put the Eredivisie side level.

On loan defender Karim Rekik had a fantastic opportunity to win the game for PSV late on, but he mistimed his header following a perfect Georginio Wijnaldum cross, leaving the tie finely balanced ahead of the return leg at San Siro on August 28.

Fenerbahce 0-3 Arsenal: Gunners put one foot in the group stages.

Fenerbahce 0-3 Arsenal: Gunners put one foot in the group stages.
Goals from Kieran Gibbs, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud have put Arsene Wenger's men in a commanding position in the Champions League play off ahead of next week's second leg.
Arsenal ran out comfortable 3-0 winners over Fenerbahce in Istanbul on Wednesday night to put one foot in the group stages of the Champions League.

Second half goals from Kieran Gibbs, Aaron Ramsey and a penalty from Olivier Giroud made sure of the win, with the Gunners now firmly in the driving seat ahead of next week's second leg at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsene Wenger was forced into one change from the opening day of the Premier League season with injury to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain ruling him out of the trip to Turkey.

Santi Cazorla replaced the England international with Lukas Podolski having to settle for a place on the bench.

Fenerbahce gave starts to new signings Bruno Alves and Michal Kadlec, while another new arrival Emmanuel Emenike was named as a substitute.

Having dominated the opening exchanges, Arsenal tested goalkeeper Volkan Demirel for the first time after 19 minutes.

Cazorla created the first opportunity for Walcott, his through ball nearly finding the forward, but Demirel slid in well to intercept.

The loose ball fell to Tomas Rosicky and he delivered a perfect cross for Giroud but the striker’s header was just wide of goal.

Fenerbahce were struggling to get into the game and failed to test Wojciech Szczesny in the opening half.

Wenger's early season injury problems continued just after the half hour when Laurent Koscielny was forced off with a head injury.

The French defender clashed with Pierre Webo and had to be replaced by Carl Jenkinson.

The hosts began the second half at a much higher tempo but fell behind six minutes in as Gibbs scored a crucial away goal.

Just after the hour, Arsenal doubled their lead thanks to Ramsey.

He received a pass from Jack Wilshere 35 yards from goal and moved at pace towards the Fenerbahce defence. As he reached the penalty area, Ramsey fired a low shot into the bottom corner, although Demirel should have done better.

The victory was secured with 14 minutes to play as Kadlec brought down Walcott inside the penalty area. Giroud made no mistake from the spot, sending Demirel the wrong way to complete a perfect night for Arsenal.

Chelsea 2-1 Aston Villa: Ivanovic seals Blues win.

Chelsea 2-1 Aston Villa: Ivanovic seals Blues win.
The defender headed home a Frank Lampard free kick midway through the second half, but could have seen red after appearing to elbow Christian Benteke just two minutes earlier.

A second-half goal from Branislav Ivanovic ensured Chelsea made it two wins in a week as the Blues saw off Aston Villa 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Jose Mourinho had previously gone four Premier League games without registering a victory over Villa, but he finally bucked that trend at Stamford Bridge courtesy of Branislav Ivanovic's thumping header.

Chelsea made a flying start when Antonio Luna inadvertently scored past his own goalkeeper before Christian Benteke levelled proceedings on the stroke of half time.

And it looked like the home side would be frustrated until Ivanovic met Frank Lampard's free-kick with 17 minutes remaining.

Mourinho made two changes to the Chelsea team that beat Hull City on Sunday, with Juan Mata and Demba Ba replacing Kevin De Bruyne and Fernando Torres, the Spaniard omitted from the squad altogether.

Paul Lambert had to make one enforced change from the Villa side that opened with a win against Arsenal on Saturday, as Ciaran Clark came in for the injured Nathan Baker.

Chelsea started with plenty of intent and caused the Villa backline plenty of trouble, and they were rewarded with the breakthrough after just six minutes.

Oscar threaded a through ball into the path of Eden Hazard on the left-hand side of the box and his curling effort was saved by Brad Guzan only to unluckily rebound off Luna and into the back of the net.

After scarcely touching the ball in the opening 20 minutes, Villa finally started to settle into the game. They had their first glimpse of goal in the 22nd minute when Benteke picked up the ball in midfield and the Belgian laid into the path of Karim El Ahmadi but his long range effort went harmlessly wide.

But Chelsea's inability to convert possession into goals cost them dearly deep into first half stoppage time.

Gabriel Agbonlahor beat Ivanovic for pace on the left and picked out Benteke, who took one touch before firing home a left foot strike that squeezed inside Petr Cech's near post.

The second half continued in a similar fashion with Chelsea enjoying the majority of the play but unable to break down a stubborn Villa defence.

And they were nearly punished in the 61st minute when Matthew Lowton broke on the right and played a pass along the floor that Benteke stepped over before Agbonlahor hit a first time strike that curled just over the crossbar.

Just two minutes later and Villa once more came desperately close.

Benteke picked up the ball on the left and crossed deep to the far post where Andreas Weimann connected well with a right-foot volley but he was denied by a smart save from Cech.

Chelsea made a double change with Andre Schurrle and Romelu Lukaku replacing Mata and Ba.

And the changes sparked the home side into life when Ivanovic found the breakthrough in the 73rd minute.

Lampard played a teasing outswinging free kick from the right and the Serbian timed his run well to head beyond Guzan.

There was almost time for one more twist when Weimann hit a half volley from Benteke's assist but he was thwarted by Cech.

Chelsea now turn to their attention to Monday's trip to face Manchester United at Old Trafford, while Lambert's side welcome Liverpool to Villa Park on Saturday.

Atletico Madrid 1-1 Barcelona: Neymar denies hosts victory.

Atletico Madrid 1-1 Barcelona: Neymar denies hosts victory.

The Brazilian struck in the second half to ensure both sides took home a share of the spoils in a tight affair.

Villa's goal was also his first for his new club and came against his former side but Barcelona will go into the return tie on August 28 with the upper hand.

Whether Barca superstar Lionel Messi is available for that clash, however, remains to be seen after he came off at half time with a suspected hamstring injury.

It was Villa who struck with the first real chance of the game as his brilliant finish put Atleti ahead on 12 minutes.

A sweeping counterattack led to Villa playing a clever pass out wide to Arda Turan and the Turkey international returned the ball to his 31 year old team mate.

Just inside the area, Villa's volley was exquisitely controlled and found the bottom corner for his first goal for los Rojiblancos.

Barcelona characteristically controlled possession but struggled to create much against a well-drilled Atletico defence.

Making matters worse for Barca, Messi made way at half time and was replaced by Cesc Fabregas.

The former Arsenal captain went close to an equaliser four minutes into the second half, moments after Alexis Sanchez was denied by Thibaut Courtois in a one-on-one.

After the Chilean's effort was kept out, he set up Fabregas, who was unable to get a shot away under a last-ditch tackle from Turan.

Clear cut chances were few and far between for Barca and Andres Iniesta tried his luck from range but his effort was comfortably saved by Courtois.

Diego Costa forced Victor Valdes into a save on the hour-mark before Barcelona equalised through Neymar six minutes later.

The Brazil star had been introduced just seven minutes before he headed in a Dani Alves cross at the back post, after the right back exchanged passes with Xavi.

Alves' cross was perfectly weighted and Courtois was unable to get across quick enough to keep the header out at his near post.

Barcelona looked the more likely to find a winner and saw Xavi curl a free-kick just over on 72 minutes.

Courtois came out quickly to block a Sanchez shot at the back post minutes later as the visitors took control of the contest.

A tired looking home side were pinned back into their defensive half but they remained compact enough to keep Barcelona at bay and set up an intriguing second leg at Camp Nou.

'Doping is fine, if it is for recovery' - Schuster.

The German coach feels the administration of stimulants in order to assist the regeneration process of players after an injury is acceptable.

Malaga boss Bernd Schuster says doping should be allowed as long as it is used for recovery purposes as opposed to enhancing the performance of players.

This month, the German media reported about three finals in which German players allegedly took illegal substances.

One the games mentioned was the 1954 World Cup final in Bern, often refered to as "the miracle of Bern" which die Mannschaft won 3-2 against the strongly favoured Hungarian team.

Schuster, however, believes there are different kinds of purposes for doping, saying if it is used for regenerative measures, it is absolutely fine.

"As long as it's for recovery purposes, I have no problems with it," the 53 year old told Sport Bild.

"If a player can reach his full fitness level two to three weeks faster, then it makes sense.

"It's not about players being brought up to 120, 150 or even 180 per cent. It shouldn't be performance enhancing.

"It's about getting players to their usual level as soon as possible."

Schuster also insisted that during his active time, he was always given "something" by the medical staff, but he never questioned what kind of substances they were.

"Doping wasn't an issue during my active time, as it didn't exist as we know it today.

"We all took something, but no stimulants in the classical sense. The doctors always gave us something, however.

"We never questioned what they gave us, as it wasn't about getting us to run over the pitch with 200%, but rather to conquer minor injuries or illnesses.

"Whenever I used to have a thick ankle, the swelling was kneaded away with a staff. The tears literally bursted out of every pore of my body.

"Nowadays, the lads can recover from a torn muscle fibre within a week. It's great how much has positively changed in that regard."

The latest rumours in the global transfer market.

Sneijder leads Galatasaray to victory as Fenerbahce suffer shock defeat.

Last season's runners up surrendered a 2-0 lead to lose at Konyaspor while Besiktas battled to a win thanks to two late goals.

Galatasaray began the defence of their Super Lig title with a comfortable 2-1 triumph over Gaziantepspor on Monday.

Netherlands international Wesley Sneijder fired Fatih Terim's side ahead within 10 minutes at the Turk Telekom Arena.

And it got better in the second half when Burak Yilmaz opened his account for the season from the penalty spot to effectively end the game as a contest.

The away side grabbed a consolation from Muhammet Demir in the 76th minute but they were unable to stop the defending champions from opening their campaign with a win, while Monday's other game saw Kayserispor record a 1-0 home win against Sivasspor.

Elsewhere, last season's runners up Fenerbahce suffered an opening day shock as they surrendered a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 away to Konyaspor on Saturday.

Joseph Yobo and an Emre Belozoglu penalty had given Ersun Yanal's side a two goal cushion inside half an hour at the Konya Ataturk Spor Kompleksi.

And they were looking equally comfortable in the second half until two goals in a minute from Tomas Borek and Ali Camdali stunned the Champions League playoff contenders.

The turnaround was complete with four minutes remaining when Recep Aydin sent the home fans into raptures and left Fener with plenty to think about before they face Arsenal on Wednesday.

Besiktas are hopeful of breaking into the Champions League places this season and made the ideal start with a 2-0 home win over Trabzonspor.

Slaven Bilic's team had to be patient for victory with the away side showing stubborn resistance at the Recep Tayyip Erdogan Stadyumu.

But two goals in the last 15 minutes from Olcay Sahan and Gokhan Tore ensured Besiktas started with a win.

Bursaspor are another side that harbour hopes of playing in Europe's elite competition, but their season started with a 2-0 defeat away to Eskisehirspor.

The game looked like it was heading for a draw until Argentine defender Renato Civelli scored past his own goalkeeper in the 76th minute and Henri Bienvenu added a second with nine minutes remaining.

Meanwhile, Karabukspor were triumphant 2-0 against Kasimpasa, while newly promoted Rizespor enjoyed home success as well with a 1-0 win over Genclerbirligi.

Akhisar Belediye were also victors on Sunday as they defeated Elazigspor 3-1, while Antalyaspor and Kayseri Erciyesspor played out a 0-0 draw on Friday.

Juventus suffer Marchisio blow.

The midfielder has suffered a "first second degree tear" of his medial collateral ligament and will now be missing for over a month.

Juventus have confirmed that Claudio Marchisio will be out for a period of between 30 to 35 days, after he picked up an injury during Sunday's Super Cup victory over Lazio.

Goals from Paul Pogba, Giorgio Chiellini, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Carlos Tevez secured the trophy for the Bianconeri on Sunday.

But with the success came a major setback, as Marchisio suffered a torn ligament during the match at Stadio Olimpico.

"Claudio Marchisio today underwent an MRI scan at Turin’s Fornaca Clinic after taking a knock during the first half of last night’s Super Cup clash with Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome," read a statement on the club's official website.

"The scan of the midfielder’s right knee revealed a first second degree tear of his medial collateral ligament.

"He is expected to be sidelined for a period of between 30 and 35 days."

Antonio Conte's men will start off the 2013 14 Serie A campaign with a trip to Sampdoria on August 24.
